How Badly Do You Want A Wii?

April 28th, 2006 by Pugwash | Nintendo Wii

The purile joking about the Revolution’s new name (Wii) began almost immediately after Nintendo’s announcement yesterday with even the official Nintendo Revolution forum filling up with suggestions for advertising slogans for the console.

Michael Goodman, senior analyst of media and entertainment strategies at The Yankee Group, believes the name change is a mistake. “I thought Revolution had much more meaning,” he told GameSpot. “It was an apt description for the console. It was a revolutionary design … the controller is pretty revolutionary. Wii just doesn’t do it for me. How do we even pronounce this? WEEE? I’m not sure this is technically a word. What is a WEE, W-I-I?”

In an interview with IGN Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America’s VP of corporate affairs, says that the name is unique like Google and Napster and she believes Wii is “more fitting and the two I’s work on a bunch of different levels. It looks like two people with heads who can play, which is the inclusive nature of everybody“.

Yeah Perrin, thats just what I thought as soon as I saw it.

    1. the biggest critic Says:

I do not like the new name its simply GAY it would make a great name for the online service though but not the console im not buying a revolution (i refuse to call it wii) im buying a ps3.

oh and for the record i heard that wii is japanese for “divine wind” it sounds lie they are talking about farts.

i dont like it its a failure now i might buy one to burn in a fire and roast marshmallows on.

    2. strizzuth Says:

no, “kamikaze” is Japanese for divine wind. I don’t think “wii” has any Japanese meaning (yes, I also checked for uii since technically the letter combination wi doesn’t exist in Japanese, I’m not THAT dumb.) It probably sounds awesome to the Japanese, but in America it just sounds stupid.

The name isn’t approachable, it’s just terrible. The “non gamer set” (which Nintendo seems to define as your grandparents and girls) just aren’t going to be interested in a game console, let alone one with such a stupid name.

      ooooh! such sadness
why did you do this to yourself nintendo! why!
you make me ashamed to be a nintendo fan!
      oh dear god why!
didnt you think that you would be ruined after doing this!

    4. milkfilk Says:

I hope they add scanlines to the Wii emulator thing. You know, make the NES and SNES games look like on a 1980s TV. Dirty it up a bit. Emulate the TV buldge maybe. Have options for RGB arcade artifacts, grit, blur.

    5. OmegaChicken Says:

Hey, at least Nintendo is revolutionizing outside the box, etc. Gee, I wonder what the next Sony console will be called…hrmm….I bet it’ll include the letters P and S and the number 4…but it’s just a hunch. Now it’s XBOX 360, then I guess XBOX 720, then maybe the YBOX. Listen, everyone, a rose by any other name still smells as sweet.

    6. joeri Says:

I’m glad it’s all PS buyers who don’t like the name.
But why are they so stupid that they don’t understand that they don’t belong to the potential buyers group and thus their opinions are total worthless?
Or are they buying the PS because of it’s wonderfull name?
Come on party people; get out off ’stand by’ mode and turn your brain ‘on’ before placing a post.
I think Wii is a wonderfull name (yes most american gigling boys brain, holding their willy all day, will quickly make a pii connection, but it’s what they think off all day anyway) and I can’t wait to buy one. I’m sure my kids will love it.

    7. Ethan Stryfe Says:

No I don’t thik it’s a good name and also i think wii sound just stupid and i mean since the N64 nintendo has been falling because it’s game have a GREAT lack of creativity because I mean Banjo Kazooee is Mario 64, and that’s just an example so they are trying to compensate it with a controller that they think will change the way of playing videogames but still they made a crapy controller las console i mean GC controller is for some king of allien with 2 thumbs in the right hand one big and one thin ¬¬, now i don´t thing wii controller will endure so much, they don’t target us anymore as nintendo costumer because they do know we will not buy from them anymore so they resigned and want to targer everyone else who has hands to play ¬¬, in the end they will make second controller that looks like a controler (and can be used like one) for normal player to buy it, in the end nintendo is drowning and this wii controller is just another drowning kick . . .

    8. loser Says:

Is there any video games that have an extreme amount of nudity in them? plz tell me the names of them, i want to make sure my friends don’t buy them by accident thx.

also where i can find pics of them, thx.

    9. loser Says:

joeri - you dont have kids you are a kid

    10. Fin Says:

Will wii be getting any cool zombie type or horror like games such as dead rising?

    11. Tyler Says:

The name is a bit odd, but I have seem more variations of Wii than anything else. Look how iBook seemed to produce things like iTalk, iPod, iMovie etc?

Why not Wii? I’m sure some people out there can play with the name to come up something fun. Like Wiitarded!

    12. mom Says:

I want a wii. Looks much more fun than any other game console. We will wait ’till we can buy used games, maybe next year. The name might seem a little silly, but I don’t mind it. PS3 just seems like more of the same to me. My kids have been chanting “We want a Wii!” They know they have to wait, but they don’t want a ps3. We have tried both, and we arn’t too impressed with ps3

    13. Plays With His Wii Too Much Says:

I like “Wii”. Maybe it’s bad if you haven’t come to terms with your sexuality and are afraid of your friends thinking you’re gay or pee your pants. It is aesthetically pleasing and fits well with the system. Nintendo made a good call — “Revolution” was gay, not sure I would have bought one had it remained the Revolution. I’m SO glad it’s called Wii.

    14. elyasaf Says:

I wouldnt call the Wii a good name but u guyz things ps3 is a good name it sucks! at least it wasnt called gamecube2 or smthg like that it looks so fun i really want onw
