Opera Browser Will Be Free On The Wii

Opera have announced that their web browser software will be free on the Wii until June 2007. After that, it will be available to purchase on the Wii Shop Channel. From Opera’s press release:

Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the “Wii Shop Channel”. Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.

The press release also mentions that Nintendo’s unique controller will be an “integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes.”

      I have mixed feelings about this move. On the one hand, I guess it’s cool that Opera is offering their browser for free with the Wii. On the other hand, I will never get used to doing any heavy web surfing on my television, so whether or not Opera is available won’t have much of an affect on me in the long run.
