CPL to test pro gamers for drugs
December 6th, 2006 by Pugwash | General
The Cyberathlete Professional League’s founder and president, Angel Munoz, has stated that a new provision in the tournaments terms and conditions will include testing players for performance-enhancing drugs.
“The potential for drugs being an issue absolutely concerns me, it should concern anybody in eSports, because as the stakes get larger, as in any sport, people will look for an edge.”
The CPL already has specific rules and regulations in place prohibiting drugs and so far, drug use hasn’t been an issue. However, if there was an accusation or indication that someone might be using a performance-enhancing substance, the CPL would now have the right to test them.
“We have very strict rules about illegal drugs,” Munoz says. “In 2007, we are going to have the right to drug test someone. It’s going to have to be this way.”
