Sony Copies Nintendo With Full Motion-Sensitive Controller

December 17th, 2006 by Cian | General, Playstation 3

Sony has applied for a patent in the US for a motion-sensitive controller device, presumably intended for the Playstation 3, which appears to ape most of the features of Nintendo’s Wii remote.

Sony had previously announced the tilt-sensitive Sixaxis controller for the PS3 but now appears determined to go the whole hog in the motion sensitive department. The patent describes a device capable of detecting many different kinds of motion. One crucial omission compared to the Wii controller, however, is the lack of a force-feedback mechanism.

If you have a spare afternoon, you can read the entire patent application here. Otherwise, you might prefer ArsTechnica’s helpful summary of its key points.
